Based on recommendations from the Portable Sanitation Association International (PSAI) and common industry standards for construction and event planning. This is one of the most common questions we get at B’s Portables—especially from first-time renters. Whether you’re running a framing crew in Rigby or hosting a 200-person wedding in Victor, figuring out how many porta potties you need doesn’t have to be a guessing game.
Here’s a quick guide based on real-world needs and best practices.

💩 Construction Sites: Don’t Shortchange Your Crew

General Rule:

  • 1 porta potty per 10 workers for a 40-hour work week
  • Add more if your team works overtime or there’s no nearby access to indoor restrooms

Example:

  • 10-person framing crew, 5-week job in Pocatello? You need at least 1 unit, maybe 2 if there’s no nearby water or handwashing access
  • 25 workers on a commercial build in Idaho Falls? Plan for 3 units minimum

Holding tanks, handwash stations, and more frequent cleanings can make a big difference on large or remote job sites like Dubois or Mud Lake.

🚽 Events: Consider Crowd Size + Duration

General Rule of Thumb:

  • 1 porta potty per 50 guests for up to 4 hours
  • Add more if your event runs longer, serves food/alcohol, or has limited bathroom access

Example:

  • Backyard wedding with 150 guests in Driggs? Minimum 3 units—or consider 1 luxury trailer
  • Outdoor fundraiser in Rexburg with 300 people over 6 hours? You’ll want at least 6–7 units or multiple trailers

Events in places like Island Park, Tetonia, or Alta, WY often need more planning due to access and weather.

💩 Other Factors That Affect Quantity

  • Remote location (we recommend backup service in hard-to-reach areas like Mud Lake or Ashton)
  • Multi-day events
  • Alcohol or food service (trust us, you’ll want more units)
  • VIP areas or weddings – people expect a nicer experience
  • Need for ADA-accessible or family-friendly units
